Try Plus ‘Umph’ Equals Victory
Try Plus ‘Umph’ Equals Victory
ByWhatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might… – Ecclesiastes 9:10
Today I came across a quote that says, ‘Triumph is just “Umph” added to try.’ When I read this, it pierced my heart. It struck a chord with me because it further confirmed that we should attack everything we do with all our might.
If you read my blog regularly, you know that another favorite quote of mine exclaims, “Every job is a self-portrait of the person who does it. Autograph your work in Excellence.”
Every task that you put your hands to do, do it with excellence. You’ve got to put forward that extra “umph” because giving it all you got is what’s going to cause you to triumph.

Too often we find ourselves with a zest and zeal for something in the beginning stages. If you want to learn a new instrument, you’ll find that at first you delight in sitting down to practice. The moment a challenge comes along, it becomes an excuse for not picking the instrument up again.
You see, at first the instrument is fresh and exciting to us. And anything that’s new, we have an appreciation for. We go after it because the vision is within reach.
The second we lose that umph is the second we stop trying. But it’s important that you keep that motivation sparked up inside of you. You must remain consistent from day to day in order to come out on top.
It’s one thing to go after your passions with effort. But what really matters, is the heart that goes into it. Your drive is the fuel that’s going to carry you from point A to point Z along your journey.
Once your drive dies down, then will you find that you’re barely even able to make it from point A to point B. That extra vigor is what will carry you, not just from point A to point B, but it will carry you infinitely throughout everything you do.
Without that extra umph, you will began to notice that you’re operating on fumes. Don’t allow that umph to dye down.
Surround yourself with people who are going to motivate and encourage you along the journey. Allow yourself to focus on that which will inspire you to achieve greater things and rise to a new dimension in life. Continue to put umph behind your efforts and watch as you triumph as you charge forth on your journey of life.

Jarrod, I read something in Men’s Fitness about resilience and mental toughness in athletes. The gist of one of the points was that it’s not how fast and strong you start out, but the patience, persistence, and determination that you continue to bring to the table that wins in the end. I guess it’s the old wisdom of the story of the tortoise and the hare
As always, excellent article Jarrod. Surrounding ourselves with positive people is very crucial to success.
I agree on this, cut off negative people around and we will be happy. I hope i can do this, because sigh..it’s hard to do!
Hi Jarrod,
