A wise man once said, “Jumping to conclusions is not half as good an exercise as digging for facts,” I totally agree.
It’s often said that assumptions don’t get us very far in life. When answers are provided to missing links then we don’t have to assume. However when variables are missing, unless we take out the time to search for answers, we will form an opinion based on the way things appear.
There are times when we’ve been offended by another. As a result, we allow the first answer that comes to mind to lead us to an inaccurate judgment call.
Most friendships are broken up due to misunderstandings. A simple mis-communication barrier can set a bad tone for it.
Broken relationships can be mended if misunderstandings were resolved. Sometimes we should give the benefit of a doubt to someone who has offended us. We should put ourselves in their shoes.
I like today’s quote, because it reminds us that it’s important that we strive to dig for the facts. It implies that we should take out time to seek the source of where the misunderstanding is coming from.
I like how the quote hints that digging for the facts is a better exercise than jumping to conclusions. Have you ever did something that wasn’t worth your time and effort? Well, that’s what jumping to conclusions does.
It causes us to base our answers on valuable missing information, when we should focus that energy on seeking answers and getting understanding.
We waste our energy focusing on the fact that we’ve been offended and as a result lose perspective.
It’s like turning the air conditioner on full blast, and then opening a window. It’s a complete waste of energy.
If someone hurts you, go to them and let them know that you’ve been offended. Let them know how you feel. Nine times out of ten, you will discover that talking to them and finding common-ground will resolve misunderstandings.
Let bygones be bygones, make amends, nothing is ever as bad as it seems. If we focus on the negative end of the spectrum, in this case, we’ll cause ourselves heartache, pain, and un-needed stress. However if we focus on the positive end, we cause ourselves to triumph.
My friend I encourage you to leave assumptions at the door. Make a decision today to dig for the facts as you charge forth on your journey of life.

that’s one very important topic Jarrod,
what i learned from reading about self confidence is that one of the main reasons for lack of confidence is the false conclusion a person makes about the way others treat him. that’s yet another reason to dig for facts
This post could save a lot of relationships. It reminds me of a mantra we were taught as counselors, ‘have unconditional positive regard for others.’ It does wonders Not to read meaning into a situation and Not to assume. Wonderful reminder!
Wow… Kim that is so big… ‘have unconditional positive regard for others.’ Wow that’s a take home message in itself. I love that. Thank you so much for contributing!!
