Quiet The Mind – Is Silence The New Black?
ByWe live in a world where there’s so much going on. From that stressful meeting at work, (not to mention the crazy traffic on the way in), to the rippin n runnin that you’re faced with in the evening, life can become a chaotic challenge. The second you walk in the house you’re faced with tasks and chores that need your immediate attention, no wonder your anxiety level is at an all time high.
Making a decision to choose peace is a much needed decision that we all need to make from time to time. Despite the hectic lifestyle, it is possible to combat the constant stress that you may face from day to day.
Sometimes you just have turn off the TV

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m an avid TV watcher. I guess it’s no secret if you’ve read my recent post, Play and Act The Part, you’ve noticed that the post begins with me telling a story based off a television sitcom I watched prior to posting.
Whether it be the television, radio, or other means to fill up the silence in the room, sometimes it’s better to just be in the silence. I find that I’m more peaceful when I turn off the TV for a while and I’m faced with pure silence. It’s like stepping into another reality or getting a knock in the head saying you can’t run anymore, you must face the silence.
Have you ever been walking down the street and you had one of those moments where you turn the corner and run into someone? As you step to the right to go around them, they do the same causing you to run into them again. Now you step around them to the left and their instinct is the same causing an endless cycle of such until one of you makes a major move to stop the cycle.
Well, silence is the same in that, when you make a decision to face it there’s no going around it. You’re forced to face your thoughts. You’re forced to allow your mind to be the driving force of what’s “entertaining you” instead of allowing the TV or radio to play the part.
When you’re in silence, you learn more about yourself than you do when otherwise. I hear so many people say, “Oh, I can’t be in just a quiet room by myself, I have to have something to fill the silence.” Okay I’ll admit, studies actually show that some people focus better when music is playing, but certain kinds of music allow for better concentration, but that’s another article for another time.
I encourage you to set a specific time a day to operate in the silence. When you come home from work, set apart a hour or two to quiet your mind. Trust me, I can readily identify with filling the silence because I’m a part-time musician, and there’s this stigma that us musicians have to have music playing 24/7.
It’s a choice I’m making to better myself and operate in silence and I encourage you do to the same. Read a good book. Study the Word of God. Exercise. Clean house. Whatever you do, set aside some time out of your busy, hectic day to bask in the silence and you will see the difference that it makes as you charge forth on your journey of life.
