Are You a One Hit Wonder?
Are You a One Hit Wonder?
ByIt’s interesting to watch public figures grow-up in the music industry. Over a period of time you’ve probably seen celebrities or have even watched your favorite music artists do their thing in the public eye. You’ve probably enjoyed watching them venture throughout their journey to reach their ultimate level of success.
You watch them grow from young to well… not so young (if you will) in the public eye. The more they grow and mature, the more you take a liking to them. You’ve watched them go through ups and downs. They’ve defeated public scrutiny, adversity, and they’ve overcome the unfortunate humiliation that comes with being a public figure.
However there are those that we call One Hit Wonders. These are people who have taken the world by storm with one smash hit and thereafter, have dropped off the music scene. After dropping out of sight they leave you wondering, how can someone with such a great presence disappear when it appears as though they’ve reached success.
The unfortunate thing about being a celebrity is that they’re constantly under public scrutiny. From the ever so rude paparazzi to money hungry reporters it’s not so easy living the life of the so called rich and famous.
In it to win vs One hit wonders
What’s the difference between someone who is in it to win it, and a one hit wonder? Someone who is in it to win it doesn’t allow adversity to determine their altitude in life. They take on the attitude that no matter what comes, “I’m going to conquer this.” They are people who inspire and motivate us to keep pushing.
Those who have stood the test of time have proven themselves to to be triumphant. They do so by demonstrating that no matter what the naysayers have said, or no matter what criticism they receive, they will overcome the struggles they face.
One hit wonders aren’t as much of a hit once they drop off the scene. Therefore, we don’t get to watch their progress as much as we do public figures.
Most would assume that one hit wonders just don’t “have what it takes,” which in my opinion is a bad assumption. As a result, there is a negative connotation that goes with carrying such a title and it’s that everyone just assumes that they’ve given up.
My question for you
You may or may not be in the public eye, but does the term one hit wonder apply to you? …or are you in it to win it? I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there will probably come a time, while chasing your dreams that you face adversity. Some might even say that it’s inevitable. Will you crumble under pressure and drop off the scene?
Use that motivation that you’ve learned from such great examples in life and apply it to your dreams. What dreams have you allowed to die due to extreme pressure in your life? Don’t crumble under pressure my friend, stay motivated as you charge forth in your life journey.

I love this concept. For me, what keeps me from being a “one hit wonder” is my faith to keep moving towards a goal and never to give up!

@Alex – Yes, this resonates with me too! I always say that you only fail when you stop trying. One hit wonder is a nice way of putting it, but we all have the choice to become a “hit wonder” (if you will).
Love the analogy. And no sir, I am NOT a one-hit wonder. I am in here to stay, bro!
@Valerie – LOL, I hear ya… me too!!!
hi jarrod,
how are you?
i found your blog off the lifeoptimizer blog.
i love the analogy used in this post.
i’m definitely not a one hit wonder lol!! i believe one hit wonders didnt have back up plans, were caught up in the moment, didnt find time to sharpen their skills or move along with the trends, became to comfortable or probably became fearful of success again……..
enjoy the rest of the day
Love it, what a great analogy. Adversity always seems to find a way to ramp up when one decides to make great change in life. For me it was kidney stone surgery and back surgery in the last six months. And guess what? Laying flat on my back, I grabbed my laptop and said, “It’s time to go to work!”
Great article Jarrod.
@Ayo – I love Life Optimizer Donald is a prolific writer…and his guest writers. I totally agree. Imagine if we went about everything in life with lack of preparation, a defeated mind-set, and no back up plans… woah that would not be good.
@Jeremy – Thanks man! Sometimes we make our greatest strides after we fall down! I commend you for your great work my friend.
