TGIF? How About TGFE?!
TGIF? How About TGFE?!
ByFor years, there has been a famous acronym T.G.I.F, which stands for Thank God It’s Friday. I used to say it so much that most would think I invented it. The premise behind T.G.I.F is that when we work a whole week and Friday comes, we celebrate Friday because it’s the day before the weekend, which is a time of fun, rest and relaxation for most people. Fridays give most people something to look forward to.
Being the optimist that I am, I’m all for being thankful. Especially when we’re thanking God. However, I can’t help but shun the mind-set behind T.G.I.F. I think the week would go more stress-free if we learn to thank God for everyday that He wakes us. Instead of T.G.I.F maybe we can shift our mind-set into T.G.F.E, Thank God For Everyday.
I’m reminded of a great song that affirms to us that everyday is a day of thanksgiving. When you wake up in the morning, what do you look forward to? Are you in the moment or are you looking forward to Friday?
Let’s shift our focus
There’s nothing wrong with looking toward the weekend. In fact, it’s better to look forward with expectation than it is to look at our past with regret. However, let me challenge you my friend to broaden your focus. Everyday when we wake up, we should be thankful for the brand new mercies that the Lord has given us.
When we wake up, it’s another opportunity to be a blessing to someone. Everyday is one day that we are closer to the destiny that God has for us.
When a new-born baby enters this world we celebrate. Why? Because it’s a brand new life that has come into this world. There is something about new life that moves us. When our birthdays roll around we celebrate for having lived another year of life and we look forward to another year of life.
When the New Year comes, we’re thankful for having lived another calender year and we set goals and resolutions for the next year to come, but what do we do from a day to day basis? I guess it’s true what they say, the more rare something comes along the more we appreciate it but the more exposed we are to something the less we appreciate it… something to that effect.
Therefore instead of T.G.I.F, we should simply thank God for everyday because it’s the first day of the rest of our life. Everyday we should celebrate another day of life. We should celebrate endless possibilities. Don’t wait for your Friday or excuse me, “Birthday or New Year” to come before you celebrate and look forward with expectation, explore endless possibilities everyday as you charge forth in your life journey.
