Overcoming Overwhelm – Accomplishing Your Goals Part 1

By Jarrod Clark
Hi, welcome back! I hope you enjoy this post. Don't forget to comment, thanks!

This is part 1 of a 7 part series that was inspired by my previous article, 7 Reasons Why We Give Up On Our Goals. If you haven’t read that article, you may want to do so by clicking here. This article will give you an overview of this series.

Overwhelmed, as an adjective, is defined as: rendered powerless especially by an excessive amount or profusion of something.

There are 3 ways in which we become overwhelmed. We can become overwhelmed in our spirit, overwhelmed with the burden of our daily lives and we become overwhelmed by a particular task or goal.

Overwhelmed In Our Spirit

Psalms 142:3 says, When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, Then You knew my path. In the way in which I walk They have secretly set a snare for me.

In this passage of scripture, David is crying out to the Lord with a troubled spirit. In verse 9, he declares that The Lord is his refuge. In this text, David was sending up a plea for relief from Persecutors. (Psalms 142:1-7)

When faced with prosecutors or even when we’re intimidated by adversity,we become overwhelmed and therefore we loose sense of direction. However, we must do as David did, when faced with with his prosecutors. We must run to God and declare that He’s our refuge.

Inspirational Messages | Overcoming OverwhelmWe all have our own crosses to bear. People will try to get to your emotions or get under your skin. However, when you’re intimidated, know that the Lord is your refuge. He hears your prayer and He will make a way of provision on your behalf.

Overwhelmed With The Burden of Our Daily Lives

One of the many reasons that we may become overwhelmed and frustrated, in our everyday lives, is not being in control of our time. Throughout the day, we find ourselves trying to meet deadlines and as a result, we discover that time isn’t always on our side.

One of the best things we can do is to set priorities for our daily obligations. What is most important to you in life? What can be eliminated from your daily tasks to make room for other, more important things in your life?

One of the best things we can do to prevent ourselves from becoming overwhelmed, is to develop our time management skills. Maybe you have to juggle between getting the kids ready in the morning and meeting your own morning obligations, all in a small time frame before leaving for work.

It may be helpful to make a list of your top priorities in life and let the non-essential things fall to the bottom of the list. After making a list of priorities, set a reasonable time frame for them as this will help tremendously with the unneeded stress that you feel in your daily lives.

Overwhelmed By A Particular Task or Goal

This point closely relates to the type of overwhelm mentioned in my, 7 Reasons Why We Give Up On Our Goals, article. We easily become intimidated by the work that it takes to achieve our goals, and that intimidation causes us to become overwhelmed.

When you become overwhelmed that is a chance to exercise your faith. God has the road laid out for you. I’m reminded of a great song, that reminds us to take our burdens to the Lord and leave them there.

When accomplishing our goals, it may help to take it one day at a time. If your goal is to become physically fit, don’t worry about whether or not you’re going to accomplish your ultimate goal of achieving the body you want, take it one day at a time and before you know it you will start to notice the results that you long for.
