Keeping It Real

By

Now days we hear so many people using the term, “Keeping It Real.” When it comes to the explanation of keeping it real, society paints the picture in our mind that there is only one way to keep it real.

Personally, I believe that keeping it real is relative. In other words, one person’s reality may be totally different than another person’s reality. Whereas one person may do one specific thing in one situation, another person might do something totally different.

Just because two individuals do something totally different, in the same situation, does not mean that they are not keeping it real with themselves. It simply means that their beliefs are different.

For instance, if you were raised to believe that it’s wrong to fight, then that is your reality. However, someone else may believe that fighting is the only way to resolve conflict; they may have been raised in a totally different environment; therefore their reality is totally different than your reality.

The problem is that it’s so easy for us to become conditioned to another person’s beliefs. Society paints the picture that if we don’t do what others think we should do, in a certain situation, that we are not “keeping it real.”

When we do things that conflict with what we’ve been preconditioned to do, that is when we are not “keeping it real.”

Do you have instances in your life where you are not keeping it real? Maybe you were raised to think one thing but you’ve become corrupted by society’s way of thinking. Maybe you’ve had friends to convince you against everything that you believe. Does this change your reality? Does this change everything you believe?

It can if you allow it to. When we make a decision to do what we know is right that is when we are taking a stand for what we believe in. That is when we are keeping it real. I want to encourage you to take a stand for what you believe, and act accordingly. Be who you are; don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. Continue to keep it real as you go through your life journey.
