The Importance of The Word “I” In Positive Affirmations
ByI can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. – Philippians 4:13 (NKJV)
An affirmation is anything that we repeat over to ourselves. It is something that we believe in when repeated enough times.
One of the most important parts of an affirmation is the word I. You can make a general statement to a group of people and it can either empower the group as a whole or tear down the group depending on the type of affirmation.
However, by integrating the word “I” the affirmation becomes more personal.
Society often shames us into thinking that it’s wrong to focus on ourselves. It makes us feel selfish when we put ourselves into the picture. Personally I don’t think there is anything wrong with building ourselves up.
Jude vs 20-21 tells us “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.”
Using the word “I” isn’t a selfish thing if used in the right way; of course we don’t want to get into the mind-frame of thinking too highly of ourselves. Romans 12:3 tells us, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you.”
When making positive affirmations, every statement should be made in healthy moderation. It’s completely healthy to say, “I have faith the size of a mustard seed, therefore I can move mountains” or “I am more than a conqueror because the word of God tells me so.”
The word “I” in these statements is powerful because it brings about the belief in us that yes individually we can move mountains. Somehow if we generalize the statement, we don’t feel as important but when the word “I” comes into play, it tells you that you personally can move mountains if you have mustard seed faith then it becomes more powerful.
The word of God is full of affirmations that are inspiring to us. It’s important that we get the word of God deeply rooted in us. When we know who we are in Christ we see ourselves differently than the world sees us. Let’s continue to build ourselves up and motivate one another as we go through our daily journey.
